Checkpoint

Hello there! It appears I’ve neglected to write anything (other than angry internet comments) since 2019 or so. Turns out that longform writing is hard and the muscle quickly atrophies. Oops!

Since my last post, I worked at Apple for about 5½ years, then left to go do other stuff. In practice, “other stuff” mostly involved moving to San Francisco and living a decadent life of park-walking and pastry-eating. Now I think it’s high time to get out of that delicious pit.

There’s quite a backlog of articles to get through! But first order of business…

…is to restore some of my decrepid projects. The code for my Jekyll blog was living on a 2013-era Macbook with software dependencies of a similar vintage. That repo has now been extracted, updated, and rehomed to my primary computer. Hooray.

Next, I need to modernize some apps that have been gathering dust over the years: SensibleSideButtons, Good Spirits, and Backgroundifier. I still use these every day, so they deserve a good bit of maintenance and polish. Eventually, I intend to resurrect all of my previous app projects and (probably) open source them in the process. I don’t like having hard work go to waste.

By the way: LLMs seem to be all the rage these days, but I find myself identifying more and more with AI vegetarianism. The tech as it currently stands feels thoroughly toxic. I don’t need to maximize my productivity, but I do need to keep my mind sharp, so I will avoid it altogether for the forseeable future — even if it has the capacity to one-shot some of these updates. Programming is fun, and I don’t wish to serve as a glorified code reviewer for the rest of my days.

You can rest assured that no LLMs will ever be used in the writing of this blog.

My ultimate goal for the next few years is to devote my energy to music, art, and game development. I’ve found it truly difficult to find creative spark in today’s political climate, but it has to be done. Somehow.

Speaking of spark, there’s a cat named Phoebe in my life now. She’s incredible! Frankly, she could be a social media superstar, but she’s on her own schedule. Here she is clapping for attentions as she often does:

Corporate social media is dead but the Fediverse is thriving, so come chat with me on Mastodon.

See you in the feeds!
